Courses

If you want to add a new class where the content is only slightly different from one that you currently run, don't add a new course, consider just putting a qualifier on a new class of the same course.

For instance, if you run a word processing class for windows and another one for Macs, use the same course, but place "windows" or "macs" in the class qualifier.

Similarly, if you run French at different levels, just use class qualifiers for "Beginners", "Intermediate", "Advanced" or "Conversation".

Add a new Course

When it is necessary to add a new course, there are two alternatives:
  1. Add a brand new course that is different from any other course you have run before;
  2. Add a new course that is a significant variation from one that you already offer.
Proceed as follows:
  1. Select the Class Management app from the Apps Menu.
  2. List all existing courses by Clicking the Titles button.
  3. Ensure the course you are about to add is not there already by carefully checking the list.
  4. If in doubt, indicate the course by clicking the radio button at the left of the line and then click Select. Check the description and the profile carefully.

Adding a New Course that's quite different

  1. If you are viewing the profile of an existing course, return to the Titles list by clicking Next. If you have just entered the app, click the Titles button.
  2. Do not indicate a course (do not click a radio button to the left of a course).
  3. Check the course you are about to add is not already in the list.
  4. Click the New Course button at the bottom of the page.
  5. Enter the Course Title, Description and Category and select Course, Forum or Social as appropriate.
  6. Click the Commit button at the bottom of the page. The Course Profile will be displayed.
  7. Add classes as required. Click here for Classes

Adding a variation of an existing Course

  1. If you are viewing the profile of an existing course, click the New Course button at the bottom of the page. The course whose profile you were viewing will be used as the prototype.
  2. The profile of the prototype will be displayed on the Course Form. Modify the title, Description and category as required for the new course.

Below these items will be a list of classes associated with the prototype course. You have the option of either transferring one or more of these classes to the new course or just copying the class and tutor details to the new course, leaving the original classes intact and retained for the prototype course. Select either Copy or Transfer as required, then click Commit.

The course profile for the new course is displayed (Classes for Course). You should then update each class:

  1. Adjust the class profile as required.
  2. Adjust class dates.
  3. Adjust leaders as required
  4. Modify location(s) as required

Adding a variation of an existing course but retaining the original course

  1. If you are viewing the profile of an existing course, click the New Course button at the bottom of the page. The course whose profile you were viewing will be used as the prototype.
  2. The profile of the prototype will be displayed on the Course Form. Modify the title, Description and category as required for the new course.

Updating a Course

Under normal circumstances, this is only used to correct a title or description.

If the content changes (particularly from one year to the next), do not update the course, but replace it with a new one as described above: Adding a variation of an existing course.

Deactivate a Course

Deactiveate does not remove a course, just makes it unusable from that point on. Deactivating a deactivated course, re-activates it again, making it useable once more.

The Course Form

Supply a Title, a Description and select a Category.

If the Course is not to be published on the web, tick the Don't Publish checkbox. This is used for courses defined to reserve a time slot at a venue for non-courses such as Committee meetings or for hiding courses while under development.
